We return to Central America

In a way, this is finally the trip we had anticipated in 2020, the one that was cancelled by the global pandemic. We're going to different places in Costa Rica than we'd planned in that previous trip, but Guatemala and Costa Rica were our destinations then, and now. In Guatemala, we're returning to Antigua and Lake Atitlan, but adding Chichicastenango to our itinerary, in part because of its best-in-the-country textiles market (and also, I think, because Marc just loves saying the name of the town, which I find adorable every single time).

Our first night, we're staying in Guatemala City, where we fly into from JFK. It's just a big old hotel with a nice pool, good enough for travel day:

Barcelo Guatemala City (tripadvisor)

From there we'll take a car to Antigua, where we'll stay in a different hotel than we stayed the last time, Casa Bella. It's in a great location, just two blocks from Central Park.

After a few nights in Antigua, we'll take a car almost 3 hours to Lake Atitlan, to return to Lush, in San Marcos la Laguna. This time we have the topmost room, the honeymoon suite, above the room we had last time. The views of the volcano and lake should be spectacular.

Lush Atitlan (Booking)

We'll have six nights on Atitlan, and as we learned the last time, it's so very simple to take the boat to all the villages around the lake so we'll hop around, see as many villages as possible, and just enjoy our beautiful suite. I took many pictures last time that looked like this:

From there, we'll take a car to Chichicastenango, an hour and a half away. There weren't many good hotels to choose from, but Marc did his best for us as he always does:

After 11 nights in Guatemala, we'll fly to Costa Rica, starting in San Jose:

After two nights there, we fly to Liberia International Airport in Guanacaste, then drive two and a half hours to Nosara, on the Pacific coast, to stay at La Joya de Nosara -- the jewel of Nosara -- for five nights:

Then back home on December 5, in time for the holiday season and chilly weather.
